Baghanwala Fm
Type Locality and Naming
Holotype section: Near village Baghanwala in Eastern Salt Range (northern Indus Basin). Hypo: Khewra Gorge, ESR Author: F. Noetling, 1894.
Lithology and Thickness
Sandy claystone. In the type section, the formation consists mainly of reddish-brown shales and platy to flaggy sandstones, characterized by an abundance of salt pseudomorphs on the bedding surfaces.
Reference section: Same lithology as in the type section. Thickness: At the type section the thickness of the formation is 100 m, which is commonly reduced, and also absent in other parts of Salt Range due to the Permian unconformity; farther south, a well Marvi-1 drilled 80 m of this formation.
Thickness: 80-100 m
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
Conformably underlain by Jutana Fm
Upper contact
Unconformably overlain by Tobra Fm = major hiatus (and erosional removal) until Permian
Regional extent
The distribution of the formation in surface outcrops is practically identical with that of the older Kussak and Jutana formations. Except Eastern Salt Range, only few erosional remnants of the formation have been preserved below the Permian unconformity in Salt Range. It has been encountered in wells drilled in the Punjab Plains; farther south it is encountered in subsurface in east Badin area. Envt: The formation was deposited in lagoonal environment under arid conditions.
GeoJSON
Fossils
Apart from some obscure 'fucoid' impressions and worm tracks, the formation is largely devoid of faunal relics.
